This image features a poster designed by Koichi Sato for the Graphic Trial 2013: San exhibition held at the Printing Museum in Tokyo.
Title of the work: Kagayuku Shojo-1: Ayatori (Shining Girl 1: Cat's Cradle)
Sato chose to reinterpret pre-war and post-war illustrations of Kiichi Tsutaya, famous for his traditional nurie (coloring book) girl characters. His focus for the technique of the piece was titled “The Possibilities of Pastel Expressions vs. Fluorescent Inks”. Printers mixed varying ratios of opaque white directly into fluorescent magenta, yellow, and custom cyan inks. A softly blurred background image was layered under crisp line work, generating a blurred, multi-dimensional texture reminiscent of Japanese confectionery (nerikiri).
